THE SILENT THIEF OF SIGHT: GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is a notorious eye disease characterized by optic neuropathy (problem with the optic nerve), visual field loss for which elevated intra ocular pressure (the pressure inside the eyes) is one of the primary risk factor.
The major problem with this disease is its asymptomatic (no symptoms) nature especially in adults. Sufferers don't know they have it so they don't seek for help till its near late or actually late. Hence the disease is tagged the silent thief of sight.
 Studies have it that glaucoma is the 2nd leading cause of blindness worldwide. There are many types of glaucoma both in adult and children but this article is not addressing that.

The implication of this is that, once a percentage of the visual field is lost, like in the photo above, it can't be regained. BREAKING: Senate Confirms Amaechi as PDP senators stage walkout

The Senate on Thursday confirmed the nomination of a former governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, as minister, amidst protest by senators of the Peoples Democratic Party.

It also confirmed the nomination of 17 others. They are Adebayo Shittu, Kadjiat Abba Ibrahim, Heineken Lokpobiri, Claidius Omoyele Daramola, Baba Shehuri Mustapha, James Ocholi, Isaac Folorunsho Adewole, Bawa Bwari, Geoffrey Onyeama and Zainab Ahmed.

Others are Masur Mohammed Danladi, Usani Uguru, Okechukwu Elemanah, Anthony Anwuka, Mohammed Musa Bello, Adamu Adamu and Aisha Abubakar.

The confirmation was done by senators of the All Progressives Congress alone as their PDP counterparts staged a walkout in protest.

The senate had earlier dissolved into a closed-door session to discuss the issue of confirmation of the ministers.

UPTH MANAGEMENT SACK 4 STAFF OVER DEATH OF STUDENT

Two female nurses and two security guards at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital have been recommended for sack over the controversial death of a female student of the University of Port Harcourt. The four workers were on duty when the 200-level student of the Department of Theater and Film Studies was rushed to the UPTH but was denied bed space. She later died due to lack of medical attention. The two nurses and the two security guards were indicted by a panel that was set up by the Management of the UPTH to investigate the death of the student, which sparked violent protest by UNIPORT students, leading to the disruption of activities at the UPTH. Chief Medical Director of the UPTH, Professor Aaron Ojule announced the findings of the panel while briefing newsmen. Professor Ojule said the affected members of staff flouted established rules and protocol of the hospital, adding that they would be placed on three months suspension without pay, pending a final decision by the Federal Ministry of Health. “After thorough consideration of the Panel’s Report, the Management of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital has called for the termination of the appointment of the two nurses”, he said. The UPTH Management also called on the Management of University of Port Harcourt to also investigate and punish those involved in the protest over the death of the female student.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) released a report Monday which placed processed meats, including bacon and sausages, in the same category as smoking and asbestos for causing cancer. Processed meat causes cancer, says WHO The report revealed that as little as two slices of bacon can increase the risk of colorectal (bowel) cancer by 18%. The report outlined that simply eating 50 grams of processed meat each day -- the equivalent of two slices of ham -- can increase the risk of such cancer by 18%. However, the authors say the risks are relatively small to begin with. The organization defines processed meat as any type of meat that is salted, cured or smoked to enhance its flavor or preserve it. Processed meat generally contains pork or beef, but may also contain poultry. The WHO now classifies processed meat in the same category as smoking and asbestos, based on its certainty of a link with cancer, but stressed that did not mean they were equally dangerous. Unprocessed red meat such as steak and lamb shanks is classified as "probably carcinogenic." Balancing risks and benefits The WHO said the finding was important for public health since processed meat is so widely consumed. However, it said red meat still has "nutritional value." "These results are important in enabling governments and international regulatory agencies to conduct risk assessments, in order to balance the risks and benefits of eating red meat and processed meat and to provide the best possible dietary recommendations," said Christopher Wild, head of the WHO's cancer agency, in a statement. According to estimates cited by the WHO, about 34,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide can be attributed to diets that are high in processed meat. That's a small fraction of the 8.2 million deaths caused by cancer in 2012, according to the latest WHO data. Source; cnn.com

Abacha Loot: World Bank Wants More Time To Compile Information

The World Bank says it needs additional time to provide comprehensive information on the spending of recovered funds looted by the late Nigerian Head of State, Sani Abacha. The World Bank told the human rights group seeking information on the loot, which is about seven billion dollars, that for now it is compiling information on the spending. According to the World Bank “In response to your request, we would like to inform you that we are still considering your request and we will need additional time because the money involved is too huge for us to handle.” The World Bank said that although it takes just 20 working days to respond to such requests, under special cases it could take much longer time. The loot stolen by the former military ruler from 1993 to 1998 is estimated to be worth 11.3 billion dollars. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, had written to the World Bank demanding information on the spending of the loot recovered from the late military dictator, General Sani Abacha. 278 FIRMS BID FOR NNPC CRUDE GRADES, Oil giant ‘committed to transparency’

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) yesterday opened the bids of the 278 firms for the sale and purchase of crude oil grades. The companies include  Televaris, Voyage Oil and Gas, Northbridge Energy, Linkstar Venture, United Refining Gashion, Stat Oil, Walter Smitth, SODE, Obat International Limited, Samgulf Petrolchemical Limited and Otahiyi Global Investment Company Limited. NNPC Group Managing Director  Dr. Ibe Kachikwu said the corporation would this week sell-off the over 20 cargoes of crude oil that have been in the market since the end of last year." NNPC Group Executive Director ( GED) Commercial and Investment Mr. Babatunde Adeniran, said the bid took cognisant of the fact that “at the end of last year, Nigeria has over 20 unsold cargoes in the market.” "The NNPC, he said, is now on the path of transparency, accountability and probity. Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division, Malam Mele Kyari, said the Federal Government is strategising to balance the pricing of crude. Kyari said the bidding would impact on the pricing of oil in the international market. He explained that the deal will now make the Nigerian crude predictable. He said the current volume of oil that the Federal Government is entitled to from the production stream is 960,000 barrel per day (bpd) saying NNPC will limit its contracts to that bracket..  NNPC, he said, is attempting to ensure that the crude ends up  in the procession of the ultimate buyers in order to avoid the present shock in pricing. He added that the corporation will ensure that Nigeria is not a major contributor to her own pricing instability." According to him, credible buyers are absent from the market and it has culminated in a situation where individuals hoard cargoes. Kyari lamented the situation “in which you have oversupply- fake oversupply that doesn’t exist and then the market reacts to that and then you have lower value.  “We have to make sure that we optimise the value of our crude. And for you to do that, you must have credible and reliable customers.  And these customers also need you, mind you, they need to lock up their deals. They call them deals. “What that means is that they have buyers who take up from them and they need to be guaranteed." They need some level of stability that will enable them plan with it.” The NNPC, according to him, recorded 43 buyers in the past, which made it impossible for it to guarantee its monthly off-take to customers. He said with the present bidding process, the government is pruning the number to 16 to stabilise the market and satisfy the customers." According to the latest gossip news updates, Angie packed a bag and virtually moved out forever after her latest knockdown drag out with the Fury star. It's said that Angie is using her time scouting locations in Cambodia for her upcoming movie First They Killed My Father to prepare for a permanent split.

the pair seemingly having a heated conversation on a hotel balcony back in Sydney last year, Angelina Jolie is  often said to be evry unhappy with her marriage to Brad Pitt.

"Brad and Angelina have been living separate lives and now she has made the first more to leave. They're both so fed up with each other that they were almost relieved as she packed up.

"Basically, Angie said, 'I'll see you when I see you.' And Brad answered with a cold, 'Yeah, good bye.'"
